Emily smiled softly to herself as Tristan fidgeted nervously next to her on the front porch of her neighbors' house. She was still having a hard time believing that the last twenty-four hours had happened, and wondered just how long it would take before everything sunk in. Just as she came to the conclusion that it probably never would, the front door swung open slowly.

Lois: "Yes? Can I help you?"
Emily: "Hi, we're-"
Lois: "Oh my goodness, Francine! I completely forgot about your lesson today! Let me clear off the bench and we can get right down to work."
Tristan: "Actually we're here to see Jacob. We're just wondering if he made it home all right."
Lois: "He got home not ten minutes ago. Why don't you come on inside?"
Emily: "Thanks."

Lois: "He's upstairs doing his homework. You're welcome to visit for a few minutes, but you can't stay all night. Can I get either of you a Coke?"
Tristan: "No, thank you, ma'am."
Lois: "My goodness. With friends like you, that boy may turn out all right after all."
Emily: "I hope so."
Lois: "If you change your mind about the Cokes, don't be shy about asking. I'll be in the living room watching my stories."

Emily: "It's a good thing you turned down the coke. Last time she offered me a cup of coffee I got handed a can of cat food. I guess insanity runs in the family."
Tristan: "There may be more going on with Jacob."
Emily: "Really?"
Tristan: "He's not like any other vampire I've ever come across. He's certainly a disturbed individual, I'm sure that's got something to do with it, but there's something else to it. I can't really explain it, it's just a feeling I get."

Emily nodded. Her arms were already aching from trying to hold him down earlier, and while she had no illusions about her own lack of muscle tone, he still seemed abnormally strong. Markus had even commented on how quickly he'd recovered after what he'd been through.
When they reached the door to Jacob's room, she was startled when it opened before she could even knock.

Jacob: "I have papers for you."
Emily: "How did you know-"
Jacob: "Your care-giving instincts are too strong for you not to come back and check in on me. Plus, you two aren't as quiet as you think."
Tristan: "Do you mind if we come in for a few minutes?"

Jacob stepped aside, allowing them in before closing the door behind them. He quietly walked over to his dresser and began thumbing through a stack of papers. The air was heavy with the smell of cigarette smoke even though all the windows were open. Emily wondered just how many packs he'd gone through since leaving Tristan's house.

Tristan: "I'm very sorry about what I did to you last night."
Jacob: "I know."
Tristan: "I wasn't exactly right in the head, but that's no excuse. I honestly feel very badly for it."
Jacob: "I know."

Tristan: "Right. Does that mean you won't try to kill me anymore?"
Jacob: "Probably."
Tristan: "That's more than I was expecting."
Jacob turned around and unceremoniously handed Emily a small stack of papers. She took them cautiously, quickly skimming over a few pages.

Emily: "What is this?"
Jacob: "I was right all along."
Tristan: "Right about what?"
Jacob: "What happened to Emily."

Emily: "I don't understand what I'm looking at."
Jacob: "The psychoactive chemicals present in the datura plant. Basically someone was calculating just-lethal dosages."
Emily: "Where did you get these?"
Jacob: "Work."

Tristan: "Just what the hell kind of work do you do?"
Jacob: "Janitorial."
Tristan: "This must be some sort of new janitorial work I was previously unaware of."
Jacob: "It's interesting."

Emily: "Thank you for this. I guess I shouldn't be as surprised as I am."
Jacob: "You can keep those. I have my own copies."
Emily: "Er, thanks."
Emily felt it was now her turn to be uncomfortable. The papers in front of her looked like little more than a collection of random numbers and letters, with the occasional word in English she was sure was put there just to make her feel insane.
She was relieved when Tristan started speaking again.

Tristan: "We won't keep you. We just wanted to make sure you'd gotten back here in one piece."
Jacob: "I'm fine."
Tristan: "In that case we'll get going."
Emily: "If you need anything you can always stop by the house."

Emily: "Right... see you around then."

Emily and Tristan followed Jacob down the rickety stairs, the three of them slipping quickly yet quietly past Lois who'd fallen asleep on the couch.
Jacob offered no goodbyes, merely locking the door behind them after they'd gone out.
