It seemed like ages passed before the paramedics finally arrived, though they'd made it to the house in just under three minutes. At the sound of their feet pounding on the stairs, Emily remembered to breathe again. Two of them ran through the door, Markus behind them.

Female Paramedic: "Ok folks, we need you to step back so we can get to work."
Male Paramedic: "No pulse, no respiration. Pupils fixed and dilated."
James watched with a dazed expression, his gaze not fixed on anything. Markus stood back with Mary, who was unsure of exactly how she should be feeling. Emily had retreated to a corner, emotionally shutting herself down completely.
Female Paramedic: "Ok let's get--"

The world around James narrowed to a pinpoint, the sounds meshing together into a static-like noise. Tristan hadn't been breathing, didn't have a pulse, and was no longer responsive to anything. Not having a heartbeat was normal, the lack of breathing and responsiveness were what had shaken him so badly- those were not normal. The realization of what was happening struck him suddenly, full force. James backed out of the room and into the hallway.

Emily followed instinctively, saying nothing. She knew any words she could say would just be hollow, meaningless- she just wanted him to know that he wasn't alone. It wasn't much longer before the paramedics came out from the bedroom.

Male Paramedic: "I'm very sorry, there was nothing we could do. As we were telling your friends in there, I'm afraid you'll have to wait for the coroner to get here to pronounce him dead and pick up the body- it's been a very busy night."
Female Paramedic: "I'm very sorry for your loss." |
