Emily slowly pulled Mary's car into the parking spot, quietly reflecting on the strangeness of the evening. It was now nearing 1AM- the little shindig had pretty much fizzled out after James had taken Mary to urgent care. Everyone had just felt inexplicably exhausted, like they'd spent the night running around instead of gathering for a quick glass of champagne and a few rounds of pool. Emily hesitated slightly at the sight of a new car in the parking lot, wondering who had visitors that night.
She made her way toward the end unit, slowing down halfway there as she realized the lights were on upstairs. Had she forgotten to turn them off before they left? The shadow of a figure moving past one of the downstairs windows made her heart race as she stopped dead in her tracks. She couldn't remember if Mary had set the alarm- they hadn't exactly left the house on good terms, both of them a bit distracted.
Maybe James had stopped by to pick up some of Mary's things. She began walking toward the house again, keys ready to be used as a weapon if needed. Just as she was about to open the door, she realized how stupid it was that she was going to walk into the house instead of calling the police. She stopped in her tracks, reaching for her cell phone.
Before she knew what was happening, the door swung open and a tall man was in front of her. Emily let out a blood curdling scream and nearly fell backwards off the landing.
Joseph: "Emily?"
Emily: "Oh my god! Mr. McMally!!" |
