Emily watched as the color completely drained from Mary's face. Her voice came out as a hoarse whisper.
Mary: "How much?"
Receptionist: "We can work out a payment plan if you can't take care of it all today."

Caroline: "Mary, goodness, shouldn't your insurance take care of that?
Mary: "I don't have insurance, mother."
Caroline: "How do you not have insurance? I know so many companies are cutting benefits, but I can't believe EnVisio would get rid of them entirely!"
Mary: "They still have benefits. Great benefits. I just don't work there anymore. I haven't for awhile."
Caroline: "Oh dear, did you get fired?"
Mary: "Of course I didn't get fired! I quit."
Caroline: "Why on earth would you quit a job with such good benefits? And what are you doing now? Surely you're working..."
Mary sighed and let her face fall into her open hands.

Emily: "She's painting, full time now! She's really doing some extraordinary work."

Caroline: "Oh. Dear. Well, we can talk about that later. Joseph?"
Joseph: "Yes Dear?"
Emily cleared her throat and nodded to the receptionist

Joseph: "Oh, right, of course. Will you take a personal check?"
Mary: "Daddy, no!"
Caroline: "Mary, let us help you."
Mary: "Why? So you can hold it over me for the next 200 years? I can pay for it. Eventually."
Caroline: "Mary- "
Mary: "No, mother."
Joseph: "Are you sure, Mary? We don't mind…"
Mary: "I'm sure."
Mary turned back to the receptionist.

Mary: "Now, about that payment plan…?" |
