Emily had thought the cake had looked good, but it was nothing compared to how good it tasted. The tartness of the lemon was balanced perfectly with the sweetness of butter-cream frosting, the cake its self delicate and light. She was startled out of her thoughts by Mary elbowing her in the ribs, looking pointedly toward the window.

Emily: "Um- James, Tristan, Markus -can you guys come with Mary & I in the kitchen and help us with the… coffee?"

Mary: "We're in trouble, guys."
Emily: "Did you see how many there were out there?!"
Mary: "How do you kill a zombie, anyway?"
Emily: "I thought you just staked them."

James: "That's vampires, punkin."
Mary: "Silver bullets?"
Markus: "Isn't that Coors beer?"

Tristan: "That's werewolves."
Emily: "You kill werewolves with beer?"

James: "Damn it, Markus- this is all your fault!"
Markus: "Whoa, how is this my fault?!"

James: "Mary, get your parents and boyfriend upstairs now!"
Emily: "Take Andy, too."
Tristan: "Emily, go with them. We can handle things down here."
Mary didn't hesitate, running as quickly as possible to the other room. Emily was close behind her.

Mary: "Mom! Dad! I want to show you the new painting I've been working on! Chris and Andy, you guys should come look, too."
Emily: "It's an amazing piece of work!"
Andy: "You've been quite busy lately, Mary. Remind me to give you a raise."
Mary: "Less talk, more walk."

Mary just about shoved them up the stairs, reaching the top just before the first zombie managed to get the front door open. Mary was ridiculously grateful it hadn't just come smashing through the door or windows like always happened in the movies.

Markus, James, and Tristan stared at the group of zombies shuffling their way into the house. The one in the front slowed and stared directly at Markus.
Zombie 1: "Master…"
James: "I knew it was you!"

Markus: "What?!"
James: "It just called you 'master'!"
Markus: "Clearly it said… Mazda. Maybe someone's in it's parking spot."

Tristan grabbed a large knife from one of the drawers in the kitchen, pushing past James & Markus and aiming for the head of the lead zombie. After a few swings, he managed to drive it back a few feet.

James: "No way, that was a very clearly pronounced 'master'."
Tristan: "Little help, guys?!"
Markus: "I think the zombies should just eat James' brains. I can't possibly see what I have to do with any of this."

James: "Um, Markus?"
Markus: "Yes, James?"
James: "I think you should call off your pets!!"
The zombies had worked their way past Tristan, two of them shoving him back into the dining room. They were now focusing in on James, dragging forward with an eerie single-mindedness. Markus was openly startled.

Markus: "Whoa, hey! I take it back! Bad zombies! No to eat James!"
Zombie 2: "Eat James…"
Markus: "No! Oh shit."
The zombies fell on James, quickly overwhelming him. |
