</td>

'Ignorance is bliss' suddenly made far too much sense to Mary. While she generally reserved the term for the everyday garden-variety stupidity she encountered on a daily basis, she now felt compelled to use it on herself. It amused her the way that a simple thing like a pair of shoes could have been the trigger for the growing unease she felt.

Emily: "Did you find them?"

Mary jumped a little, dropping the pill bottle she'd been staring at for the last 5 minutes. Emily's eyes narrowed.

Mary: "No, but that's ok. Never mind, I've got other shoes that will work with that skirt."
Emily: "Were you going through my things?"
Mary: "Not intentionally…"

Emily's eyes fell to where the pill bottle had once sat on her night side table, then back up to Mary. She crossed the room with such speed that Mary was sure she was going to attack her. Instead, she was on her hands and knees searching for the bottle. Mary spotted it first and swooped down before Emily had a chance to get a hold of it. Emily stood up and glared at Mary.

Emily: "Could I have those back, please?"
Mary: "How long have you been taking sleeping pills, Emily?"
Emily: "It's really none of your business."

Mary: "None of my business? I'm supposed to be your best friend."
Emily: "Then drop it."
Mary: "At least tell me that you're seeing a doctor for these and not just visiting dark alleys behind my back."

Emily's silence stunned Mary.

Mary: "Oh Emily…"
Emily: "It's not like that at all. I was seeing a doctor, but… it doesn't matter. Just… can you give those back to me?"

Mary: "Who's getting them for you?"
Emily: "I don't want to talk about this anymore."
Mary: "It's Stone, isn't it?"

Emily didn't answer, but made a grab for the bottle. Mary was faster, though, and jumped back before Emily even got close.

Mary: "That son of a bitch."
Emily: "Oh stop with the melodrama- it's not what you think at all."
Mary: "Really? I suppose he's a doctor as well as a businessman. How foolish of me."

Emily: "You're just looking for reasons to hate him, aren't you? Why can't you just let me be happy for a change?"
Mary: "I don't have to look very hard to see things I don't like. I just don't trust him, Em."
Emily: "You've made that perfectly clear now."

Mary stared at Emily in silence. They'd played this scene out before, more than once. Mary couldn't understand how Emily could fail to see that Stone wasn't good for her, that she could do better. It was always the same argument between them, and Mary wasn't sure she could stand to have the same outcome as before. For now, she'd give up the fight. The last thing she wanted between them was distance- Mary couldn't protect Emily from afar, she learned that the hard way already. Without a word, she tossed the bottle of pills on the bed and turned to leave the room.

Emily: "You don't even care why I have to take them, do you?"

Mary pretended she hadn't heard, continuing down the stairs and out the front door.
