Episode 17 - Part 17

</td>

James watched Chris and Mary from over the rim of his glass. They had disappeared behind the crowd, and all he caught were momentary glances of them being completely inappropriate in public. They seemed happy enough, though it was a bit odd given Mary's feelings about vampires. Not to mention laughably ironic, considering the rift between her and Emily over Em's choice in men…

James frowned as Mary began to plow forward through the crowded dance floor, Chris in tow. It looked as though he was trying to pull her back. James stood from the barstool and made eye contact with Mary. He took a hesitant step forward, then stopped as Mary looked back at Chris and let him pull her back into his arms. James inhaled deeply, catching the faintest trace of fear in the air, hanging heavy with the lingering cigarette smoke surrounding him. He stepped back, pulled a wad of cash from his pocket, threw it on the bar and walked out the door.

Chris smiled to himself as Mary fell back into his arms. Her entire body language had changed to defeat. He didn't know why, and didn't particularly care. The girl was clearly damaged goods. As she turned her back on the bloke with the big hair and sank her body into his own, he almost understood Stone's joy at playing games with people. Someone held power over this one, and she was so blind to it she actually thought it was herself. The irony was so beautiful it almost inspired poetry.

He had to admit he was just the slightest bit curious. Not even Stone's people could pull up anything on her; no monsters from the past to bring to town. Not for this one, anyway. The girl knew how to keep her secrets, he'd give her that.

Chris pulled away from her and kissed her on the cheek.

Chris: "I'll be seeing you, Love. Sleep tight, and don't let the bedbugs bite."

He walked away before she could respond, lighting a cigarette on his way out the door. As he congratulated himself on a job well done, wondering if Mary even had the faintest clue how easy it was to manipulate her, he suddenly found himself on the ground with his face in the cold cement.

Chris: "What the-"

Just as the pain from the blow to the back of his head finally hit, he was being lifted back off the ground and shoved into the brick wall of the building with such force he knew it wasn't human. It took a moment for his vision to clear before he could focus on his attacker. He grinned slowly at the fury on James' face.

Chris: "Well, well-"

James hit him again, sending blood spraying into the alley.

James: "DON'T talk. I don't want to hear a single word. The only reason you are not dust in the street right now is because I didn't have the presence of mind to figure out how to hide a pool cue on my person on my way past the bouncer. Have you heard of a restraining order? Because you've got one. If I EVER see you anywhere within a LIGHT YEAR of her again, your fuzzy little brain won't have the time to register my presence before the molecules that make up your body are scattering to the wind."

James threw Chris back to the ground, then grabbed his ankle and pulled him behind a dumpster. A few more kicks to the abdomen rendered him unable to move. James shoved his bloodied hands into his pockets and walked away without another word.

Mary had just walked out of the bar by the time James got back around to the front of the building.

Mary: "Hey. Where'd you go?"
James: "Needed some air. You okay?"

Mary: "Yeah, sure."
James: "What happened to your boyfriend?"
Mary: "You do know he's…"

Mary paused.

Mary: "…not feeling very well. Didn't you see him come out?"

James: "Nope."
Mary: "Oh. Okay. I'm going to head home now, it's been a long day."
James: "You walking?"
Mary: "Yeah…"

James: "Be careful."

Mary: "Sure. Thanks."

you know, this is your best yet.
i couldn't for the life of me figure how philp was fitting into this, then when he met Jade, and all of them jumped him, i put ALL the pieces together, and even still was shocked. I mean i KNEW it, i just knew it, but it was still shocking you know what i mean?

oh and i have to say that i LOVE how you put all that stuff in the background, like the seattle ufo type dealy thing, and all those real nice buildings.
I also noticed that the purple hair vampire singing karaoke was one of the vampires that was killed off in one of your episodes. i can't remember her name, but yeah i was like "its her, its her!" i dont know why.

gah philp was so hot. lol
James was really hot in this episode too.

I must say, I never actually took the time to sit and read this till tonight. I glanced at it a few times, but was easily distracted by something called "life"

I think I found a new life though.

Can't wait for the next update, almost has me inspired...almost.

Great one, I love how everyone else got a highlight now that Tristan's out of town.

You just showed James with a depth that was missing in the previous episodes, Mary starts feeling more human and Emily is now aware that she really feels something about Tristan (and I have to say I loved her refusing Andy's invitation to join his bath lol).

And... OMG Ian came back to get Emily! So bad Tristan isn't here to play hero, but I'm sure that Mary and James will manage with that jerk.

Love it!!!

Ughh!! Was really rooting for Erebus. Poor Phillip. Andy is such a scumbag, and not half as cute as the rest of the cast. Get rid of him!!!

But anyways, I like this chapter. Really puts the main story back in focus after all the sidetracks. Looking forward to the next one.

Ahem.

I read this the day it was posted but I wanted to go back and read it again before I commented. It was fabulous, per usual. JAMES. Of course, James is my simulated vampire platonic lifemate, but still, I was super glad to see him really 'take the lead,' so to speak. (Although, at one point, his hair did kinda freak me out. Hah.) Fantastic job; can't wait for the holiday episode!

Wow. A bit disjointed in places, but you've filled in a helluva lot of gaps in the plot. Interesting...

Do you have a fixed idea of when the story will end? Obviously at some point, Andy's "game" will be revealed to most of the main characters. I'm wondering whether I need to start mentally preparing myself for it to end, or if it'll go on for as long as you still have ideas :) Like, perhaps, after the main story has finished, the characters might go off and do other stuff...?

I am also jealous of you because your lj Scrapbook is working. I want mine to work, damnit (http://www.livejournal.com/support/see_request.bml?id=527871).
[identity profile] rosewalker.livejournal.com wrote:

We are continuing the story until we run out of stories. :) We are basically going with a television-like format, and have arcs planned out for at least 2-3 "seasons" already (probably about 20ish "episodes" per season).

So far these characters have managed to live on in various forms for about 15 years, so I reckon they'll never really get put to bed for good.
