</td>

Mary walked slowly to the bathroom. Before she could shut the door, James had pushed his way in.

Mary: "Kind of don't want an audience right now, James."
James: "What are you doing?"

Mary raised her eyebrows and gestured to the toilet.

Mary: "Just the normal sort of bathroom things."
James: "I mean with Chris. Listen, this has gone on long enough. I know he's not really your boyfriend, I know he's a vampire, and I'm 99% sure he's the vampire who kidnapped you just after Emily got to Deception Pass."

Mary: "Good for you Sherlock. And you're right, I'm done with his games. That's why I'm going to kill him tonight."
James: "You're going to what?"

Mary: "Kill him. Stake through the heart. I've been training. There was a cow's heart - It's this whole big thing."
James: "You can't be serious."
Mary: "Of course I'm serious. Believe me, he'll be dust by sunrise."
James: "I'm not letting you do this alone. I can help you."

Mary: "HELP me?!? You couldn't even help me help Emily, and you actually like her. The hell if I trust you to help me! There is one person in this world I can count on, and that's ME."

James had seen Mary angry before, often, in fact - but nothing like this. He found himself making a quick scan of the room to make sure there were no sharp or otherwise dangerous objects in sight as Mary began pacing the small room like a wild, caged animal.

Mary: "And to think I actually counted on someone else when it came to the most important - scratch that - the only important person in this god-forsaken world! What was I thinking?!?"
James: "What were YOU thinking? What was I thinking! You have impossible standards! I didn't even know where Tristan WAS let alone who he might be with! I wasn't even sure he'd come back, how was I supposed to know he'd come back with a woman!"
Mary: "You're right. How could you know he'd be completely unreliable? It was my responsibility to account for that, guess I'm slipping. Get out of my way."

James stepped in front of the door, blocking her exit.

James: "No. You don't want my help? Too bad."

Mary could feel her heart pounding so fiercely she thought it might burst. The surface of her skin tingled with hot sparks, and she suddenly realized that the phrase 'seeing red' wasn't just a figure of speech.

Mary: "Don't make me move you."

James tried hard to keep from laughing.

James: "Mary, you don't have to go everything alone, you have friends!"
Mary: "Yeah? I've been locked in a bathroom for fifteen minutes, SCREAMING MY FUCKING HEAD OFF. So tell me, where the hell are my friends?"
James: "RIGHT HERE!"

Mary: "That's got to be the most hilarious thing I've heard all night! Look, James, I'm sorry I was stupid enough to forget, for three seconds, that all you're interested in is getting laid. Silly me. Maybe it was the eyeliner that threw me, but you are just a man, after all. You can quit bluffing with this knight in shining armor crap, because I call. Let's settle this right now - the only way you will ever get me into bed is if you can master time travel and go find me as a moon-eyed, naïve little girl. Or, you could save us both the trouble and go look up one of your multitudes of adoring jailbait fans, like you do every other night."

James could feel the fury burning in his eyes, but even that didn't penetrate Mary's icy exterior. He moved aside from the door and opened it in a grand gesture, taking a bow.

James: "M'Lady."

Mary didn't break eye contact until she had passed him. At that moment, he grabbed her upper arm, his voice a hot, low hiss next to her ear.

James: "Before you go, let me show you my cards. I've done a lot of things I'm not proud of. There are things I would give my life to be able to take back. But there is nothing - NOTHING - I could do that would make me hate myself so much as to take a toxic, bitter, broken thing like you to my bed."

Mary didn't look up. She paused for a moment before breaking free of James' grasp. She stormed straight out the front door without even stopping for her coat.
