</td>

Roland: "We didn't see much of Andrew after he went to Harvard- he was home over Christmas the first year, but after that he sort of dropped off everyone's radar for a few years."
Mary: "If he you think he tried to let you die that night, why did you give him the money?"
Roland: "We thought it might help him get out of the life he was born into. Deep down I think we also hoped it would get him out of our lives as well."

Mary: "Do you know how he ended up in Deception Pass?"
Roland: "As far as I can tell it was pretty random. I didn't even find out he was back in Washington until '99. His foster parents, Mike and Cathy Hodgson, were killed in a boating accident out on lake Washington and he came to town for the funeral. I hardly recognized him at first- I guess I wasn't really expecting to see him again. At any rate, I guess he'd been living up there in Deception Pass since '97 or so?"
Mary: "That's what all the records I came across seemed to say."

Roland: "That sounds about right. That'd be the year I had the gallstones, not going to forget that anytime soon. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
Mary: "I think you've caught me up with my earlier research, thank you. It's been helpful."
Roland: "I wish I could help more, but we never felt it our place to pry too deeply into his personal life. He had a really rough start, the things that happened to him are the sort of things that leave lasting scars."
Mary: "What sort of things?"

Roland's expression darkened.

Roland: "Honey, that's not the sort of thing we really wanted details about- there was a lot of abuse, that's all we know. We just tried to help him out in any way we could."
Mary: "Everyone seems to think he's this really great guy."
Roland: "I think he is, on the surface. But the deeper you go I think the more you start to see that there's a real darkness in him. He's just not right."
Mary: "So why are you telling me all this? How do you know I'm not working for him and now I'm going to shoot you and your wife dead?"

Roland laughed softly and took a sip of his long-cooled coffee before answering.

Roland: "Because that's just not the way Andrew works. It's too obvious, for one."
Mary: "I suppose you're right. Plus I get the impression he'd rather leave people alive to prolong the pain."
Roland: "Now that's something you'd probably know better than I would, though I wouldn't put anything past him."

Mary: "I won't take up any more of your time. I think I should be heading back- it's a long drive and I don't much feel like dealing with traffic."
Roland: "Understood. Let me walk you to the door."

Mary: "Thank you for everything."
Roland: "Don't think anything of it. Just… if you care about your friend you'll do everything you can to get her away from him. He's no good."
Mary: "That's what I've been trying to tell her for months now. He's got her and just about everyone else around us totally wrapped up in his bullshi- um, crap. It's like talking to a wall."
Cecelia: "Still playing games… it's such a waste."

Roland: "Well, good luck with everything. Hopefully your friend will wise up sooner rather than later."
Mary: "Hopefully. Thanks."
Cecelia: "Drive carefully."

That's my car in the last frame... well, except mine's blue, and has California plates. Weird.
