Dr. Sutherland looked up sharply at the EMT as he fumbled with his words.

Dr. Sutherland: "You know her?"

Markus nodded mutely.

Dr. Sutherland: "Then get out of here, we've got her. Johnson, she needs blood *now*, I need O-negative while you get a type and cross-match, and I want tox screen results ten minutes ago. Carmen, get a ventilator over here."

Markus walked backwards away from the ER as Jaeger assisted with the transfer. He'd managed to hold it together as long as he could, only hoping it had been long enough. He looked up at the fluorescent lights, letting them bleach the image of Emily dying out of his retinas.

Dr. Sutherland: "I've got a pulse. Where's my ventilator?"

Her heart was beating.

Markus let out a shaky breath, counting in his head how long Emily's body had been starved for blood and oxygen. He took one last look at the ER staff starting Emily on a transfusion before stepping out of the ER to go find Mary and James.
