Mary was disoriented when she came to. Something had happened--something bad. There was a dead woman, cold and gray. James was clumsily trying to pick her up. He was scared, Mary could feel it. She was afraid for him.
Tristan: "Mary! Mary get down from there this instant!"

The hissing of Tristan's voice flooded her with dread. He sounded angry and impatient. If his voice were an octave higher, he could be her mother. She looked around for him but saw nothing.

Mary: "Tristan? Where are you?"
Tristan: "I'm right here! Come on, we have to hurry!"
Mary: "I don't see you! And hurry to what? Are we going to help James?"
Tristan: "I'm standing just on the other side of the… portal, I guess. And no, we're going to help Emily."
Mary: "What portal?"

Suddenly it all came rushing back to her and she realized that she was the cold, gray woman. Utter panic filled her, and then slowly faded to a strange sort of indifference.
Mary: "Am I dead?"
Tristan: "Oh Jesus. This is going to be a very long night. Mary, do you see a light? Or a tunnel? Dead relatives? Anything?"

Mary watched the scene unfolding before her. James passed her body to Dr. Sutherland, then paced sideways, running his fingers through his hair and rubbing his nose. Deanna stood behind him. Other people seemed to blur into the background. There was definitely no portal, doorway or tunnel. Mary turned back to her own body, watching as a nurse inserted an IV.

Mary: "No! I don't see any of those things! But I'm looking at my body right now and my eyes are closed, so that's probably why."
Tristan: "But Mary, if you can see your body…"
Mary: "Right. My logic is broken. Hey, does everything look different to you?"
Tristan: "Different how?"
Mary: "Was there always that gigantic hole in the floor?"

Tristan: "There's a hole in the floor?"
Mary: "Yes. A porcupine just went down it. Does that seem right to you?"
Tristan: "A porcupine?"
Mary: "I'm pretty sure."

Mary: "Ouch! What the hell?"
Tristan: "What happened?"
Mary: "I fell."

Mary: "Hilarious. Hint taken. Tristan, I can see you, I'm going to jump through this hole. It would be good if you caught me because it appears to be a very long drop."
Tristan: "Okay, but from where I'm standing you're perfectly level with me."
