Markus: "How long was she out?"
Dr. Sutherland: "It's hard to say. The situation was a little unusual. Your grandmother seemed to be under the impression that she went into cardiorespiratory failure moments before they brought her into the ER."

Markus groaned and let his forehead fall into his hand.

Markus: "So, you've met my grandmother?"
Dr. Sutherland: "Yes, nice woman. She spoke very highly of you."

Dr. Sutherland: "Anyway, we started CPR and tried to defib, but there was no response. You know the drill. We ventilated with humidified O2, and started her on warm saline. As soon as her temperature came up a couple degrees, we were able to resuscitate and begin external rewarming. She's stable now, but still unconscious. She's very lucky. There were no signs of frostbite, and as I'm sure you know, it's fortunate that she was in water- in all likelihood, it lowered her temperature quickly enough to reduce the brains need for oxygen before there was a chance for any damage to be done. Her prognosis should be quite good if she regains consciousness."

Markus: "Thank you, Doctor, for all of your help tonight."
Dr. Sutherland: "That's what I'm here for. Of course I do need to recommend a psych consult when she wakes up."
Markus: "Should I ask why?"

Dr. Sutherland took off his glasses, rubbed his eyes, and then put them back on.

Dr. Sutherland: "I realize Mary has had an unusually bad night, and the story her friends told me made no sense whatsoever. It was something about butterflies in South America, global warming and Jake Gyllenhaal… I wasn't really following. But what I did follow was the trail of water all the way to the new maternity ward. I don't really understand why someone would choose hypothermia as a suicide method, but it happens."

Markus sighed heavily.

Markus: "Can I see her?"
Dr. Sutherland: "Of course."

As soon as he saw Mary, still and pale, a red-haired image of Emily, he put everything together. She'd gone after Emily, and she planned to come back. Abigail had helped her. God only knew how much the rest of them had participated, where they had gone, or what they would do if their plan failed. Not to mention what consequences everyone around them would suffer because of it.

Markus: "Enough is enough."
