After their impromptu housewarming party had come to an end, Mary and Emily sifted through boxes in Mary's room in search of pillows, blankets and photographs. Emily had never been without her camera during college, so if the two of them had really known Laura there was bound to be evidence.

Vexingly, they found none.

Mary: "Shit!"
Emily: "What is it?"
Mary: "I have some pictures."
Emily: "Where?"

Mary: "In my closet."
Emily: "But you haven't unpacked yet."
Mary: "At the old house. Want to go on a field trip?"
Emily: "Not really. I just took a pain pill, I'll probably get car sick."

Mary: "Say no more. I've no interest in cleaning vomit out of my car again."
Emily: "I'll go with you in the morning."
Mary: "No, I need to figure this out tonight or I'll never sleep."
Emily: "Will you be okay on your own?"

Mary: "Sure, why not?"
Emily: "I don't know. Today has just been… weird."
Mary: "Yes, it has. Will you be okay staying here on your own?"
Emily: "Yeah, I should be. I want to unpack a few things. I'll see you when you get back."
Mary: "Don't forget to lock up behind me!"

Mary smiled and headed out the door, excited to have a mystery to unravel. It was the first time she remembered feeling so charged with energy since deciding to save Emily no matter what the cost. The past several months had been little more than getting through each day, one by one. They had both spent time in the hospital recovering. Emily's recovery had been much longer, though Mary prolonged hers as much as she could. She hadn't wanted to leave Emily alone in the hospital overnight, and she hadn't wanted to be alone herself.

Once they were both home, the real recovery had begun. Emily had appointments with a psychologist and was unable to drive herself. Mary fell easily into the role of caretaker when Emily allowed her to. Some days were better than others. Emily had almost immediately turned to rage over hopelessness about what Andy had done to her. Her behavior had been erratic at times, but always understandable.

The real turning point came when Emily decided to get rid of all the things Andrew Stone had ever given her. Or touched. Or looked at or breathed on. Everything went into a metal garbage can. Mary went out for gasoline and matches, and together they burned it all. Mary rubbed her eyebrows, which had only recently grown back, and smiled.

The fire burned well into the night until there was nothing but ashes, but Emily still seemed dissatisfied. They decided against their first plan of crossing back into the Underworld and leaving the ashes there, and chose instead to bury them in the ground, in the world of the living. Negotiations ensued; Mary didn't want the ashes too close to Scruffy or the other pets she'd lost over the years, but Emily wanted the burial site within easy walking distance so she could spit on it regularly.

They compromised and began digging in a spot near the mouth of the woods behind the Complex. Emily was finally satisfied with the depth near sunrise, just as Mary was beginning to get paranoid that one of the neighbors would see them and assume they were burying a body. In essence, that's exactly what they were doing-burying Andrew Stone forever. Emily insisted on pouring the ashes into the hole herself, and then they both piled the dirt on top of them with their bare hands. The ritual was completed with a fight over who got the shower first, followed by bandaging the blisters on both their hands and splitting a bottle of champagne at 7:30 in the morning.
