Emily had been home no more than twenty minutes when she heard Mary's car in the driveway. She hadn't even made it up the stairs, instead collapsing on one of the newly delivered couches in the living room. The TV was on, though she wasn't even aware of the show playing out in front of her.

Within seconds Mary had come bounding through the door and sat down beside her.

Mary: "I take it by your proximity to the television you never got around to painting your room."
Emily: "What? Oh. No. I decided I was feeling lazy."
Mary: "You're still way ahead of me."
Emily: "Only because I'm not into doing all sorts of research."

Mary: "Speaking of, you are not going to believe what I found out."
Emily: "I don't think much will surprise me at this point."
Mary: "I figured out what Laura's up to."
Emily: "Oh yeah?"

Mary: "First of all, we're so getting the internet hooked up in this place as soon as humanly possible. There are some really crazy people hanging out at the library."
Emily: "Aside from yourself you mean?"
Mary: "Way crazier. Anyway, so after spending way too long wading through half a million useless websites run by bored teenagers with nothing better to do than make up rituals, I decided to take a look at some actual books on demons and spirits. Did you know that the library here has a huge occult section?"
Emily: "Mary, I don't even know where the library is."

Mary: "Oh. Well it has a huge occult section, and that's where I found out what Laura must be up to. I first had to figure out what her goal could possibly be, that's what my hang-ups were before, why I wasn't finding anything. Then it hit me-Brian's a plastic surgeon, right?"
Emily: "Right."
Mary: "So why do people go to see plastic surgeons?"
Emily: "Because they want to look better; they're unhappy with some aspect of their physical appearance."

Mary: "More specifically, they want to look younger. So I started looking into spells for eternal youth, and voila, things started falling into place. It didn't take me long to find this ancient spell for eternal youth that hit each and every one of her little weird things that had to be 'just so'."
Emily: "For real?"

Mary: "For real. Well, except for the bone colored tulle. That's still a mystery. But the spell that used almost all of the same flowers, the blood of a virgin, and a certain type of candle wax for eternal youth."
Emily: "The blood of a virgin? That's freaking creepy!"
Mary: "Isn't it? The whole spell is done by being sealed to a person who has the ability to provide 'eternal youth'. Sound familiar?"
Emily: "Brian."

Mary: "Exactly. It's completed when a holy man binds the spell-caster to said person forever. That means that when the priest does his little wedding ceremony, all of the youth from everyone enclosed in the church would be absorbed by Brian and transferred to Laura."
Emily: "Killing him in the process and making everyone else old and ugly."
Mary: "Lovely, isn't it?"

Emily: "So what do you think we should do?"
Mary: "I think that we should wait until the night before the wedding and check out the church. She would have to set up some sort of perimeter for the spell in order for it to retain its strength. You know what? It might not be a bad idea if you scope out the hotel where the reception is going to take place just in case."
Emily: "What, alone?"
Mary: "Yeah, we won't have much time since it's best to do this just before the wedding, so it's best if we split up."

Emily: "What did you want me to look for?"
Mary: "Anything unusual."
Emily: "Like circus freaks?"
Mary: "I was thinking more like stuff that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up."
Emily: "Circus freaks make the hair on the back of my neck stand up."
Mary: "This is serious, Em."
Emily: "Sorry."

Mary: "Just be aware of your surroundings, like if anything just feels 'off'. There could be weird floral arrangements or demonic symbols, just about anything. It'll probably be really subtle, so I guess just take note of everything."
Emily: "What if I get caught?"
Mary: "Just say you're a guest at the hotel and you took a wrong turn."
Emily: "Good idea. And you'll be checking out the church?"
Mary: "Yep."
Emily: "What if you get caught?"
Mary: "I won't."

i just started reading the story this season, so i caught up on everything (in three days :( it would have taken less time if life hadn't intervened. stupid sleep), and i just have to say:

this is seriously one of the most awesome things i've ever read. it's amazing what you've been able to do with the sims, and mary is probably my favourite character next to james. i love love love the way she is, even when i want to slap her for being so dense. this is an amazing story and it's so funny in parts and tragic in others that words can't aptly describe how much i love it. <3 i know i'm gushing, but really, this is so cool. and i love mary's response of, "i won't". :D

Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment! I'm always interested in hearing which characters people feel most connected to, just out of my own curiosity. ^_^
